Reasons why you are feeling demotivated to study and how to overcome it

Demotivation is something almost every person goes through in his or her life, especially during this Covid-19 pandemic.

This pandemic has brought a drastic change in the students wherein; they develop a habit of inactivity. They feel demotivated to study mainly due to staying at home all day and interacting with their teachers and fellow mates virtually.

In this bleak situation, seeking motivation is a tough thing to seize, mainly when it comes to things you don’t like to do. In this situation, self-motivation is a key element to work on systematically.

Demotivation can also make us quit which results in a series of mistakes throughout our professional career. Well, for every problem comes a solution.

So, here are some of the main reasons why you are feeling demotivated to study and also some important tips through which you can motivate yourself.

To start with, let’s get to the reasons why you are demotivated:

1.       Overwhelmed by college work –

Students often don’t feel like studying until and unless there is an immense pressure of assignment or project deadlines. They keep on procrastinating the assignments to the next day and by the time the deadline occurs, the motivation in them kicks in.

One of the best ways to encounter procrastination or demotivation is by pursuing your time-management skills. Take in as much work as possible without making it unenjoyable. Prepare a schedule for your college work without being stressed and pressured.

2.       You haven’t set your goal yet –

When someone has a goal to achieve something in their life, he or she will develop a feeling of motivation in oneself. Think of where you want to be 10 to 15 years from now.

If you are living a life without a purpose or intent, you tend to do things for the sake of doing things rather than to do something that you want.

3.       Stress and anxiety –

With a lot of work comes stress. Stress and anxiety reduce your energy level leading to a feeling of demotivation. Most of the students have the habit of studying for the exam during the last moment.

Thus, resulting in no proper sleep cycle, stress, anxiety, mood swings, etc. Too much stress and anxiety during exams lead to confusion and even loss of memory.

4.       Dealing with symptoms of mental illness –

Mental illness can be easily spotted in mankind. Whereas, there are cases in which the symptoms cannot be suspected.

Mental illness often leads to depression, which results in an individual being demotivated and being hopeless. If not treated well, it can get worse and tend to have repercussions as well.

5.       Your goals are too big –

Having goals is an essential thing to seek motivation and lead a purposeful life. However, ensure that the goals aren’t too big to achieve with endless tasks, which seems impossible to achieve. Instead, think about your to-do list.

Even though your goals are too big, break them down and make them simple. This will make it much easier to accomplish, which keeps you motivated to achieve the higher end of your goal.

6.       Inappropriate ways of learning –

Using an inappropriate learning style is also one of the main reasons for demotivation. However, everyone has their way of learning through which they seek more concentration. Understanding and executing one’s learning style can make them develop in a smooth running of things.

Now, let’s move on to tips on how to overcome demotivation:

1.       Set your goals and maintain a to-do list-

Setting goals for oneself is one of the key elements for self-motivation. Choose your goals wisely, based on your strengths, capabilities, and resources available. Take a piece of paper and a pen, note down the things you need to accomplish, and prioritize a to-do list.

Make sure the list is small and strike off or tick things off, one at a time, once you are done accomplishing the things. The feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment heightens your motivation level.

2.       Take appropriate breaks and give in time for different hobbies –

Taking adequate breaks makes you feel fresh and restores your focus and concentration level. Ensure that the breaks are not for too long, which may shift your focus more on breaks and not on your studies.

Give in time for different hobbies such as listening to music or podcasts, watching movies, practicing sports, yoga or meditation, having a chit-chat with your friends or loved ones, and many more. These activities help you to regain motivation and make you feel active.

3.       Change your study environment –

Choosing your study environment will provide a good mindset to concentrate on your studies. Some like it quiet, some like it with music playing at the back, some like to study in an open place and some in an isolated room.

Choose the one you are comfortable with, which gives you pleasure and interest to study.

4.       Believe in yourself and stay positive –

Self-confidence is a key to self-motivation. Believe it or not but confidence boosts your motivation level and makes you strive through your goal with ease. A negative mind often leads to failure. Thus, believe in yourself, talk to your inner self, and trust your ability, which will lead you to success.

When you lack motivation, think of the successful person you want to become in the future, watch motivational videos and if you get an opportunity to meet successful people, try not to miss it.

5.       Choose your study method –

If your way of learning doesn’t give you expected results, try changing them. Choose the right way of learning through which you grasp things quickly and feel comfortable while studying.

Don’t hesitate to try new things. Try practicing edutainment. For those who aren’t familiar with the term edutainment, it is a form of entertainment that is educational. Edutainment aims to make learning enjoyable and fun.
